CoalislandBookLaunch2Irish Academic Press, assisted by local republicans, are holding a book launch tomorrow night, Thursday 29th October, in The Venue in Coalisland, Co. Tyrone. The book itself is Special Category: The IRA in English Prisons Volume II by renowned Irish author Ruán O’Donnell.

The second in a three-part series, detailing the story of Irish republican POWs in England’s prisons during the recent war in Ireland, it covers all the major riots, roof-top protests, sabotage attacks and escape attempts by the IRA in the period from 1978 to 1985.

Drawing on private correspondence, British state archives, declassified government documents and memoirs of key protagonists, O’Donnell’s groundbreaking work takes the reader on an intense journey through the IRA ‘prison war’ in England, confirming this theatre of action to be of far greater significiance to the efforts of the Republican Movement than previously understood.

The author himself will speak briefly on the night, before making way for guest speaker Maureen Fanning, a longterm advocate of prisoners’ rights, involved herself in campaigns for republican prisoners all through the years of the recent conflict. The event will begin at 7.30pm sharp and all are welcome. Copies of the book will be available on the night with refreshments served after.
